Learn to make butterflies from your child’s hand print in this activity.
Ages 4 and up
You will need:
- 4 pieces of construction paper (any color)
- A pencil, pen, or something to trace with
- Scissors
- Glue, tape, or a stapler
- Crayons or markers (optional)
Trace your child’s left and right hand onto 3 sheets of construction paper. Cut out the hand-shapes. (Hint: You can save time by only tracing hands on the top sheet and cutting out three sets at once). Decorate the hand-shapes with circles or patterns.

Cut out two small circles (about an inch) from the scraps. These will be the eyes. You can decorate them or leave them blank.
Draw a series of overlapping circles on the last piece of construction paper. (Hint: If you have trouble drawing circles, you can trace around the base of a glass or soda-pop can. Cut out this shape. It will be the body of the butterfly.

Cut a strip of paper about a quarter-inch wide from the scraps. Try to make it as long as you can.
Fold the strip in half and glue, tape, or staple it to the head of the butterfly to make antennae. If the strip is long enough you can curl the ends by wrapping them tightly around a pencil or pen.
Glue, tape, or staple the hand shapes to the butterfly body. Glue or staple the eyes to the head of the butterfly (the same end as the antenna).
Hang up your butterfly for everyone to see!
