More and more parents are coming to realize that computer games, handheld games (Gameboy, PSP) and console games (Wii, Gamecube, PS2, etc.) can be a valuable learning tools for their child. The problem that most parents have is deciding what is appropriate for their child.

As I said in the previous article, there are many ways to try software before you buy. But if you cannot sample a game, what do you do then?

Reviews

The first thing you do is check reviews. There are bunches of sites that offer opinions by parents, educators and even kids on what is good or not good about certain games. Many will offer opinions content, age appropriateness and fun factors. A few that we like here at Brighter Minds include:

  • SuperKids
  • Kaboose

Word of Mouth

One of the best ways to find out about games is to ask other parents. Chances are if your child’s friend likes a game, your child will like it too. In addition, another parent is likely to be willing to share goods and bads about certain games with you.

Rental

If you can find the game you’re looking for at a store that offers rentals, get it. However, if you are at all worried about the game content that you play it before your child does. If you like it, you can have your child try it. In many cases, you can play with your child and have as much fun as they do!

ESRB

One important way to decide what games are appropriate for your child is to check the ESRB rating. These ratings decided upon by The Entertainment Ratings Software Board are used on console games, handheld games and computer games. The ratings offer an age rating, as well as qualifiers that call out specific items that some may find objectionable. You can learn more about the ESRB at www.esrb.org/index-js.jsp.

Remember, playing games can be fun, entertaining and educational for your child. You just have to help them find the right ones.
