Everybody knows how to make Valentine’s Day cards, but today we’re going to kick it up a notch and explore making cards that pop-up when you open them.
The first thing is to make the outside of the card like you normally would using construction paper, crayons, and glitter. If you made your card by folding an 8.5″ x 11″ sheet in half, you will need to cut a second sheet of paper to 8.5″ wide by 6.75″ tall. If you folded your first sheet in quarters, your second sheet should measure 6.5″ by 5.25″.
Fold the second sheet of paper in half.
For the larger version measure 1.25″ down the long side and for the smaller card, you only need to measure an inch. Cut out a semi-circular shape starting from the place you measured. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look exactly heart-shaped at this point. The final shape will be viewed from an angle, which will make it appear somewhat distorted.
Fold diagonally between opposite corners.
Write a Valentine’s Day message on the heart-shape you’ve just created. Or draw a picture or just color and decorate the heart.
Glue the folded flap down to the inside of the card. It is important that the pointy tip touch the inner fold and you want to place it with as wide an angle as possible without letting it extend outside the card.
Put glue on the other triangular flap and close the card. When the glue dries, you will have your very own pop-up valentine!.
