So for the past two posts, I’ve been going on and on about castles. Well, I’m not one to break a winning trend so guess what today’s topic is?

If you said “asparagus” you lose 50 points.

So, you should already have a basic castle built if you’ve been playing from home. Here’s a few things you can do to spruce it up a bit.

Towers

For a relatively small castle, toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes make great pre-built towers. You can even get buy with only one tube if you have to, but two or more are best.

Cut in half, lengthwiseLet’s assume that you only have one tube and need to get as much mileage out of it as you possibly can. Start by cutting crenelations in one end. (Crenelations, you know… those notches on the top of castle walls.

Then cut the tube in half, length-wise and trim down to be the same height as your castle wall.

Tape to the side of your castleTape (or glue) each half-tube to the front of your castle. Hint: Use tape on the inside instead of the outside of the tube for a better appearance. Instant castle upgrade!

If you’ve got two or more tubes, you can make a single tower out of each one. You need to cut out a quarter of the tube.

Line up with the crosshairsThe best way to do this is to draw a cross-hairs on a scrap sheet of paper, using a ruler. Most cardboard tubes are 1.75″ wide so measure out half this distance (7/8 of an inch) in all directions from the center. The tube should line up so that all the edges touch the points you’ve marked off. Cut down the middle and foldMark those points on the tube and draw a vertical line up the side. If you have a paper towel tube, measure the height of your castle and mark it length-wise on the tube.

Cut out the section you’ve just outlined.

Tape (or glue) that tube to the corner of your castle.

Cut down the middle and fold the flaps outwardAfter publishing this article, a brainstorm hit me, revealing a much easier way to attach the towers to the side of the castle. Instead of cutting out the rectangle you measured out, cut down the middle and along the top line. Fold the newly-created flaps outward.

Tape or glue to the side of your castleNow you have a built-in flap to glue the towers to the side of your castle.

See! Your castle is looking spiffier already.
