What You’ll Need:
- Toilet paper or paper towel roll (cut in half)
- Scissors
- Glue
- Markers, crayons, colored pencils, or paint
How to Make It:
Start by cutting a cardboard toilet paper tube in half.
Cut laterally down one of the tube-halves. Make 4 or 5 “tabs.” Cut between halfway and two-thirds the length of the tube.
Fold each tab up so that they fan out. Trim them to look like feathers.
On the other end of the half-tube, make two parallel cuts (about a quarter inch apart). Make them about three quarters of an inch long.
Fold the resulting flap up and trim to a point. This will be the turkey’s head and neck.
Fold the pointed portion of the flap down to make the turkey’s head.
Fold the sides of the tube inward and glue in place. Trim off any excess (so that the turkey doesn’t have corners sticking out and will lie flat).
You can stop at this point and use the other half-tube to make a second turkey or continue and make one really fancy turkey.
Optional Step: Cut the other half-tube into feathers and glue them to the back of the turkey. Be sure to fan them out so that they have minimal overlap with the other feathers (but they’ll still need to have enough overlap for the glue to hold).
Optional Step: Color the feathers. Alternately, you could cut extra feathers out of construction paper instead of the other half of the tube.
