Materials You Will Need:

  • Egg carton
  • Aluminum foil
  • Plastic straw (preferably without bendable tip)
  • Paper
  • Modeling clay
  • Tape (masking or scotch)

How to Put It Together:

Cut off the lid of your egg carton.

Step 1: Cover the top of the egg carton

Cover the top of the egg carton (what will become the hull of your sailboat) with the aluminum foil, making sure not to leave any holes. This is to protect your egg carton from getting wet, becoming water laden, and sinking! Use tape to secure the foil if you are worried it won’t stay.

Step 2: Attach the mast

Using about an inch/inch and a half diameter wad of your modeling clay, stick a straw into the clay (make sure it is relatively secure and stable).

Stick that wad of clay into the center of the now upside down egg carton lid. Smash it down until it sticks! It may help to flatten and score it a little bit, so it grips the egg carton.

Step 3: Attach the sail

Using your paper, slit two horizontal holes so you can slide the paper over the straw . . . then slide it over the straw. This is where you can get creative. Use colored paper or write the name of your boat on the paper. You can even cut the sail into a creative shape!

Finally, try it out! This sail boat will be great for the bathtub or pool!
