Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month? What kind of ice cream do you like? Dare to try Lobster ice cream offered in an ice cream shop in Maine and Massachusetts? To celebrate, why not make your own?

On those hot summer days making homemade ice cream is a great project to do with kids. It is a simple recipe that only takes and few steps and ingredients.

All that you need is:

  • 1 cup of milk (whole milk works best)
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • ½ a teaspoon of vanilla
  • A lot of ice
  • 1 teaspoon of salt.

You will start by mixing the milk, sugar, and vanilla together in a quart sized plastic bag. You want to make sure that the ingredients stay secure inside the bag; you don’t want it to leak out.

Next, take a gallon sized bag and fill it half with ice, crushed works the best. Add the salt to the bag with ice, making sure it’s not the other bag. Most people that make their own homemade ice say that rock salt works the best. Seal the bag shut and get ready to create the ice cream.

The next step in the process is forming the ice cream by gently placing the ingredient bag inside the ice bag and moving it around. The ingredients ideally will start to solidify after about 15 minutes. Using a towel or gloves to move the bag around will help your hands from slipping or getting very cold. After the hard work it is time to enjoy your creation. Let your kids grab a spoon and dig in! Makes about half a pint.
